KARACHI, May 3: IGP Syed Kamal Shah had here on Friday that the Karachi police had been provided Rs40.5 million as expenses towards investigations under the police reforms while Sukkur and Hyderabad ranges had been provided funds separately.
He was speaking at a ceremony at the CPO in which cash prizes and appreciation letters were given to police officials.
He stressed the need for strengthening investigation and prosecution sections to enable an early completion of cases.
The recipients were those who recently investigated the cases of sectarian killings, enabling the anti-terrorism courts to sentence culprits Mufti Shahid Hanif, Khalil Talha and Haider Ali, to death, life imprisonment and imposition of heavy fine.
The IGP said during investigation of cases, flaws and loop-holes be removed which might hinder process of justice.
He said services of experts were being hired in investigation section to do away with unnecessary delays in finalizing cases and under police reforms Karachi Police had been provided with Rs40.5 million towards investigation expenses, beside separate funds for Hyderabad and Sukkur ranges.
Syed Kamal Shah said the main purpose behind separation of investigation from operations was to improve quality of investigation and early disposal of cases. He, however, advised the investigation officers to be careful about rendering inconvenience to aggrieved and innocent person or the real culprit should not escape punishment.
The IGP said that investigation and prosecution departments be improved and strengthened so that proper headway could be achieved in speedy investigation of cases.
He said since the registration of case and till the announcement of court verdict, all stages be handled with closeness supported by concrete evidences, strong arguments and consultations of legal experts.
The IGP said the objective of segregating the investigation department was to improve the quality of investigation and to provide relief to the people at the earliest.
Syed Kamal Shah said he would hold regular meetings with the officials of investigation and prosecution branches.
CCPO Karachi Asad Jehangir, DIG Operations Tariq Jamil and AAG Sindh Habib Ahmed attended the meeting.
Later, the IGP gave away prizes to SHOs of Gulberg, Aziz Bhatti, Gulbahar and PIB police stations for showing outstanding performances during investigations of recent sectarian killings.—APP/PPI
