GUJRAT, April 26: The head of the pharmacy department of the Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Hospital has resigned from service due to ‘harsh attitude’ of the medical superintendent, it is learnt.
Sources in the hospital said MS Dr Aslam Butt adopted harsh attitude towards Dr Syeda Afsheen Tanseer when she refused to become a part of the corruption.
Being the technical member, they claimed Dr Afsheen was among the four members of the medicine purchase committee. The other three members were Dr Butt, Dr Zulfiqar and Dr Liaquat Ali Khan (deputy MS).
The sources said Dr Butt verbally asked Dr Afsheen to send him a demand of consumable and non-consumable medicines.
Differences between Dr Butt and Dr Afsheen cropped up when the latter replied to the former that she would be able to send a demand if he sought it in black and white, the sources said, adding she informed the MS that heads of all the departments (cardiology, urology, dermatology and others) were bound to show a written demand, enabling her to make a comprehensive report.
She always protested when quotations or tenders for purchasing medicines were not opened in her presence, the sources added.
When she realized the MS and other staff had been committing irregularities, she immediately resigned from the committee. They said the MS turned hostile against the doctor on her resignation.
Meanwhile, someone informed the higher authorities that Dr Butt, Dr Zulfiqar, Head Clerk Akram and doctors on duty in the emergency had been issuing fake medico-legal and other certificates after accepting illegal gratifications.
Thinking that Dr Afsheen was the complainant, the sources said the MS cursed her and inflicted mental torture on her.
They claimed the MS complained to the EDO (health) that Dr Afsheen often came late. He also complained oxygen gas cylinders’ bill had been delayed owing to her negligence, the sources added.
They said, however, the delay in cylinders’ bill was the outcome of disharmony among accountant, store keeper, contractor and the head clerk.
They maintained under these circumstances, she had tendered her resignation from service to the health secretary and also sent its copy to the Gujrat DCO.
When contacted, her husband Dr Sibtain Rizvi said she joined the hospital on a contract some five months back. He confirmed she had resigned from the job due to irregularities in the hospital.
He also claimed the MS had evolved several methods to defame his wife.
Denying all the charges, Dr Butt claimed no body was involved in irregularities in the hospital.
“I had informed the EDO that Dr Afsheen often came late and she had never been cooperative to her colleagues,” he said.
She might have some domestic problems that led her to resignation, Dr Butt concluded.
