KARACHI, April 21: Another man died in police custody on Sunday in an outpost of Orangi Town police station.

It was the second such incident after the new police setup was introduced in February. Earlier on April 18, a suspected carjacker Mohammed Ali, alias Usman, died during interrogation in the old CIA Centre, Saddar. The young man, who died in the Orangi Town police custody, was identified as Shakeel Ahmed, 32.

The police sources said two policemen, Aslam and Sohail, intercepted Shakil, allegedly snatched Rs5,000 from him and took him to Pakistan Bazaar outpost, where he was allegedly subjected to torture. Upon his death, the police charged him with keeping charas allegedly to justify his detention.

DIG Karachi Tariq Jamil, while talking to Dawn, admitted the custodial death: “We have registered an FIR against the police officials responsible,” he said.

Town Police Officer Fayyaz Qureshi said Shakeel was a drug addict and he was not wanted in any criminal case. He said that Head Constable Aslam and Constable Sohail informed him that Shakeel hanged himself in the police lockup. TPO said: “As the man was wrongly put behind bars, we have booked the two police officials for killing Shakeel and investigation has begun.”

“I think Shakeel died at noon and the two policemen informed him about the death at around 3.30pm,” he added.
