GUJRANWALA, April 21: At least 50 more people of Chianwali village were arrested on Sunday by police in a crackdown on them on the charge of blocking the GT Road at Eminabad Morr.

Residents in the village had staged a rally and blocked the GT Road when Muridke police arrested three accused involved in dacoity and robbery cases two days ago.

The protesters set used tyres on fire and smashed windowpanes of buses and wagons. Police resorted to baton charge to disperse them. Later, police booked around 300 people and arrested 56 of them who were sent to jail on judicial remand.

On Sunday police arrested another 50 people from their houses. Meanwhile, residents accused that police raiding teams had trespassed their houses, manhandled and humiliated women during the crackdown.

The affected people demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident, besides taking stern action against the policemen involved in trespassing.

RESENTMENT: Wheat growers of Wahando sub-division have voiced their concern over closing of the procurement centre in their town by the Food Department.

Speaking at a meeting here on Sunday and presided over by Chaudhry Abdul Majid Goraya, the participants alleged the Food department had closed the centre with an abetment of commission agents of grain markets.

They blamed that commission agents were purchasing wheat from them at Rs240 to Rs260 per 40kg instead Rs300 per 40kg as announced by the government.

They termed the government claim of providing better facilities to farmers false, saying they were left to the mercy of commission agents who were not paying fixed prices of their produce.

The meeting also pointed out that some heavyweight farmers were sowing nursery of paddy despite a ban on sowing before May 20.
