CAIRO, March 16: Goalkeeper Essan al-Hadary was on target as Egypt’s Al Ahli won the African Super Cup with a 4-1 victory over South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs late Friday.
Khaled Bebo scored Ahli’s first goal in the sixth minute, only to see the Chiefs equalise with a header by Cyril Nzama.
But Ahli regained the lead with a header from Hossam Ghali to lead 2-1 at half-time and al-Hadary added a third with a free kick that hit the post and bounced in off his opposite number.
Said Abdehafiz chalked up Ahli’s fourth and final goal minutes later.
This year Ahli beat the Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa 4-1 on aggregate to take the African Champions League title.
The Chiefs won their first continental title on Dec 1 with a 2-1 aggregate triumph over InterClube of Angola in the African Winners’ Cup Final.
The victory was Ahli’s first Super Cup title. Previous winners have come from Egypt, Ghana, the Ivory Coast, Morocco, South Africa and Tunisia.—Reuters
