GUJRANWALA, Jan 22: Model Town police claimed on Tuesday to have busted a four-member gang of inter-district dacoits and robbers following a brief encounter.
Additional SP Suleman Chaudhry said illegal arms in huge quantity, motorcycles, coloured TV sets, gold jewellery and other looted goods were also recovered from their possession.
Speaking at a news conference here, the additional SP claimed that councillor-elect Muhammad Azam was also a member of the gang.
He said that ring leader Nadeem alias Deemi, Riaz, Azam, Faisal Nadeem and Irshadullah were planning a dacoity while sitting in a Christians cemetery. On a tip-off, a police party raided and arrested four of them after a brief encounter while Irshad escaped.
The additional SP said a kalashnikoves, two pistols, knives, many bullets and looted goods were recovered from their possession.
The members of the gang were wanted in around a dozen cases of dacoity, robbery, murder and other heinous crimes. The DSP city and Model Town SHO were also present at the news conference.
DIGITAL PHONE NOs: All telephone exchanges in the region had been converted into digital, Pakistan Telecommuni-cation Company Ltd General Manager (phones) Muhammad Anwar said here on Tuesday.
He said that non-digital telephone numbers of Wazirabad and Hafizabad had already been converted into digital. Digital exchanges were being installed at Kamoki, Ghakhar, Rahwali, Cantonment and Peoples’ Colony.
Digit 8 has been added to the cantonment area phone numbers starting with figure 6 and digits 88 replaced with 3 in Ghakhar exchange.
ROBBERY: Robbers deprived the manager of an insurance company of his motorcycle and other valuables here on Tuesday.
Saeed Ahmad was intercepted by robbers near his house. They held him up, took away his motorcycle (GNA 1075), Rs1,400, bank draft worth Rs5,150 and other documents and escaped.
