Gladiators blitzed by Tiwana, Haris

LAHORE, Nov 2: Master Paints and Kashmirian entered the final of the Inaugural Cup Polo Tournament at the Lahore Polo Club ground Friday.

The final will be played on Sunday.

Three goals each by Ahmad Nawaz Tiwana and Sufi Mohammad Haris helped Master Paints to outclass Gladiators by seven goals to two and a half (7— 2 1/2).

Kashmirian despite losing to Travel Quest by four and a half goals to six (4 1/2 to 6) qualified for the final on better position in previous matches. For the winners Travel Quest Ashfaq scored four goals included one hat trick.

Master Paints were well served by their ace Ahmad Nawaz Tiwana and Sufi Haris who stole the limelight with their outstanding marksmanship.

Gladiators who were playing with an advantage of half a goal on handicap, could not stop Ahmad Nawaz Tiwana and Sufi Mohammad Haris from launching severe attacks from both side. Besides Tiwana and Haris, the third scorer for the winning side was Shafa Noon who scored one goal.

For Gladiators, Faiz Rahim Khan and Kamran A Nooruddin scored a goal apiece.

Ahmad Nawaz Tiwana drew first blood scoring a field goal in the first chukker. But Gladiators responded quickly when Faaiz Rahim Khan converted 30 yarders penalty hit to give his team a slim half goal lead (1 and half to one).

Master Paints dominated from the second chukker till end, scoring six goals, before Gladiators scored their second goal through Kamran A Nooruddin in the dying minute. Master Paints scored two goals each in the 2nd, 3rd and the fourth chukker to make the tally.

Two teams:

Master Paints: Taimur Malik (-2), Ahmad Nawaz Tiwana (0), Sufi Mohammad Haris (1), Shafa Noon (0).

Gladiators: Kamran Nooruddin (0), Feroz Gulzar (-1), Faaiz Rahim Khan (1), Faisal Ejaz (-2).

Agha Murtaza Ali Khan and Shah Shamyl Alam supervised the match.

Four goals by Ashfaq was the main source behind the Travel Quest win over Kashmirian. Shahzad Aziz scored the remaining two goals.

Kashmirian were playing with one and a half goal advantage on handicap and scored three goals in the match. Their Lt. Col Talha scored two goals while Adnan Lone added one goal.

Ashfaq had completed his hat trick in the first chukker when he scored two field goals and one goal through 60 yards penalty hit.

In the second chukker, Lt. Col. Talha reduced the margin for the Kashmirian by scoring a field goal. But Shehzad Aziz again increased Travel Quest lead to four goals to two and a half (4- 2 1/2) before the chukker was closed.

The third chukker saw Adnan Lone scoring a field goal for the Kashmirian. But soon, Shehzad Aziz earned his second goal to maintain Travel Quest lead (5- 3 1/2).

In the final fourth chukker both the team scored one goal each to make the tally. First Lt. Col. Talha converted a 30 yards penalty hit for Kashmirian and later Ashfaq scored his fourth and final goal of the match for the winners.

Travel Quest: Shahzad Aziz (0), Zubair Shaheen (0), Ashfaq (2), Ali Riaz (-2).

Kashmirian: Lt col Talha Saeed (0), Zain Khan Khakwani (-2), Rashid Ali Beg (0), Adnan Lone (0).

Shah Qubilai Alam and Husain Iftikhar were the umpires.
