Rain comes to Lahore’s rescue

Published July 10, 2006

LAHORE, July 9: Strong wind on Sunday morning and light rain later in the day broke the over a week-long spell of extremely sultry weather in Lahore, providing the much-needed relief to the people.

The weather was oppressive till early hours of Sunday because of the last night’s record high minimum temperature of 31.8 degrees Celsius. But the first sign of relief appeared when strong wind started blowing around 7.30am, reducing the impact of the high percentage of humidity.

It remained partly cloudy afterwards and the city received a brief spell of rain which provided the people relief against mugginess and power breakdowns.

In the evening, the city received another spell of light rain which made the weather pleasant. People thronged parks and other recreational places to enjoy the breeze.

The maximum temperature was reduced to 25 degrees Celsius at 8pm from the Saturday’s 44 degrees C. The meteorological office said the night’s minimum temperature would further fall.

The Met office said the maximum gust of the wind at 8am was 50km per hour which was generated by a low pressure developed over the area because of the persistent hot weather. The rain was caused by the monsoon current, it said.

It reported 16mm of rain in Sialkot, 15mm in Balakot and 14mm in Kotli and forecast more rain for Lahore and some other cities of the province during the next 24 hours.
