SUKKUR, April 29: Relatives of an eight-year-old boy, who died at the Civil Hospital here on Friday, accused doctors of negligence and claimed that the patient had remained unattended for more than 48 hours.

Sources said two brothers, Mohammad Ibrahim and Abdul Rehman, were admitted to the Civil Hospital after a truck had hit them near their house at Mohammadi Chowk on Wednesday.

Abdul Rehman, 12, had suffered multiple fractures, while doctors found that blood clots had formed inside Mohammad Ibrahim’s stomach and decided to operate upon him.

However, the boy was not operated upon even after two days. On Thursday night, Ibrahim’s condition turned critical, but no doctor was available at the time and the child died in the morning at about 8:30am.

The boy’s nncles, Nazar Mohammad and Nawab Gul, have sent applications and telegrams to the EDO health of Sukkur, provincial health minister and other officials, demanding dismissal of the doctor concerned who is assistant in-charge of the surgical ward. They also demanded registration of an FIR against him.

They stated that the doctor was on duty at the surgical ward on Thursday night but did not turn up, while other duty doctors paid no attention to the patient. They said timely operation might have saved the child’s life.

Fazal Mohammad, father of Mohammad Ibrahim, is a resident of Watni near Peshawar, and has taken the body to their native place. Before leaving for his hometown, he said that after the burial of the child he would come back to Sukkur and file a case against people responsible for his son’s death.

The EDO health Sukkur has ordered an inquiry into the matter.
