HYDERABAD, March 2: Sindh needs equitable distribution of water on national level and more water reservoirs in the province to overcome its acute water shortage.

This was resolved at a function held here on Sunday at Tando Mir Mehmood to pay tribute to the late Mir Brothers — Mir Ali Ahmed Khan Talpur, and Al-Haj Mir Rasool Bux Talpur. The function was attended by leaders of various political, religious and nationalist parties.

The meeting adopted five resolutions, including one to express its concern over the possible US attack on Iraq and called upon United Nations to stop the US from interfering in the internal affairs of a small country.

Praising the services of the late Mir Brothers, speakers on the occasion stressed the need for retrieving the country out of crisis, saying that it was impossible to do the same without sincere leadership.

Naib Amir of the Jamaat-i-Islami and Senator-elect Prof Ghafoor Ahmed, said the military rulers had done nothing for development and prosperity of the country since coming into power while unemployment, lawlessness and communal hatred had risen manifold.

The JI leader, while accusing the government of not fulfilling its promise of transfer of power, said that despite the Sindh Assembly’s rejection of the Thal canal, the centre was not prepared to accept its demand.

General secretary of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf Meraj Mohammad Khan warned that if the people were not educated about the political system and the true meaning of freedom and provincial autonomy, “cracks would develop in the basic structure” of the country.

Mr Khan said that the unity and solidarity of the country had been damaged by depriving the federating units of their inherent fundamental rights.

Referring to the increasing lawlessness and sectarian violence, Mr Khan said that no terrorist was hidden from the agencies.

Others, who spoke on the occasion, included Jam Saqi (PPP), Ameer Bux Umrani (PPP-SB), Yousuf Leghari (Sindh Democratic Party) and Syed Qamaruzzaman Shah.
