WASHINGTON, Jan 20: The confirmation of Condoleezza Rice as secretary of state was delayed on Thursday as Democrat members of the US Senate have expressed the desire to prolong the debates that turned out to be heated.
The Republican majority had hoped to have her confirmed by the Senate so that President Bush could swear her in as the new secretary.
The two days of hearings at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee resulted in a vote of 16-2 to recommend Ms Rice's approval by the full Senate.
