SIALKOT, Oct 29: A cow and a goat were killed on Monday in firing by Indian troops in villages near the Sialkot working boundary.
Official sources said continued firing by Indians had wrecked five more houses and devastated standing paddy crops in villages in Chhumb, Joriyaan, Bajwat, Chaprar, Sucheetgarh, Bajrahgarhi, Harpal, Charwa, Kingra, Jammu, Shakargarh and Zafarwal sectors.
The last three weeks’ continuous shelling had also impeded harvesting of paddy crops in border villages, they said.
Chenab Rangers frustrated another major Indian attempt of fencing near the working boundary late Sunday night. The firing between Chenab Rangers and Indian troops was continuing along the working boundary till the filing of this report late in the evening, sources added.
ARRESTED: Local police claim to have arrested 25 members of six inter-district gangs of robbers and dacoits, and recovered stolen valuables worth Rs1.5 million from their possession.
SSP Muhammad Tahir told newsmen here on Monday that police had recovered two luxury cars, 18 motorcycles, household goods, and cattle heads.
Police also seized seven kilogramme heroin, 52 kilogramme hashish and 104 bottles of liquor, two Kalashnikovs, eight rifles, 70 pistols, 25 revolvers, two hand-grenades and 361 cartridges, he said.
The SSP said police had also arrested 258 proclaimed offenders, including 72 POs of ‘A’ category and 138 of ‘B’ category.
BAITUL MAAL: Local Baitul Maal committee has allocated Rs20.5 million for the scholarship of deserving students.
In its special meeting here on Monday, Baitul Maal district chairman Irfan Ahmad Cheema said that Rs1.6 million dowry fund and Rs3.8 million zakat fund had been set aside for the deserving and needy people.
DEATH SENTENCE: The anti-terrorism court on Monday handed down death sentence on three counts each to two convicts in a kidnap for ransom and murder case.
According to the prosecution, Abdul Wahid Butt and Fiaz Ahmad Sahi had kidnapped Kashif for ransom from his house at Awami Road on Dec 4, 1999, and later killed him after their failure in getting the ransom.
