GUWAHATI, Nov 18: A separatist group in India's north-eastern state of Assam on Thursday offered to hold peace talks with New Delhi to end more than 25 years of violent insurgency, a rebel leader said.
"If we get a formal invitation letter from the Indian government, we are ready to come for talks in the greater interest of the people of Assam," Arabinda Rajkhowa, chairman of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), said in a statement.
The rebel statement comes two days after the ULFA's emissary and noted Assamese writer Indira Goswami met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi to initiate peace talks between the two sides.-AFP
