LAHORE, June 3: The Lahore High Court issued bailable warrants on Monday to ensure the presence of two newspaper editors on June 25.
The editors of dailies The Nation and Khabrain were issued notices for Monday in a contempt petition moved by depositors of the collapsed Taj Company. Justice Jawad S Khwaja, who is considering a plan to revive the company, issued warrants when the editors failed to respond. They could be admitted to bail in the sum of Rs25,000 each.
DELIMITATION: Justice Nasim Sikandar, a member of the Election Commission, heard objections on Monday in respect of the National and Provincial Assembly constituencies of Lahore. Mian Munir of the Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-i-Azam) complained that his residence had been excluded from NA-122 despite contiguity and included in NA-126. The objection was contested by Pakistan People’s Party leader Mian Misbahur Rahman, who also watched party interest in delimitation of other constituencies. The EC member reserved his order on the objections. The hearing would continue on Tuesday.
OIL PRICES: Deputy Attorney-General Sher Zaman Khan has been asked to seek instructions and explain why petroleum prices are raised frequently.
Petitioner-lawyer MD Tahir submitted before Justice Tasadduq Husain Jilani that oil prices had been raised after short intervals despite a slump in the international market. They were likely to go up further after the sale of oilfields to multinational companies. The lawyer suggested that the government should recover bad debts amounting to Rs10 trillion to meet the enhanced expenditure on oil.
CONTRADICTION: Justice Mian Nazir Akhtar, the LHC senior puisne judge, has termed a news item appearing in a local daily on June 2, 2002, regarding refusal to accept his appointment in the Supreme Court as incorrect and misleading. No ‘high personality’ had called on him to persuade him to accept his appointment in the Supreme Court, an LHC press release said on Monday.
POSTINGS: The posting orders of Chaudhry Muhammad Nawaz as district and sessions judge have been cancelled following injuries he received in an accident. Instead, Shaukat Ali Khan, a Lahore High Court officer-on-special-duty, has been appointed as the Sheikhupura district and sessions judge. Meanwhile, Mr Mazhar Husain Chaudhry, the additional district and sessions judge, has been transferred from Lahore to Multan against an existing vacancy.
