LAHORE, Nov 8: A division bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) comprising Justice Syed Jamshed Ali and Justice Saeed Akhtar dismissed a petition challenging official policy on admission to medical colleges.

The petitioners, Tehsin Naz and others, through their counsel informed the court that the students were granted admission to the medical colleges on the basis of marks obtained in FSc and entry test examinations with a ratio of 65 and 35 per cent, respectively.

They prayed the court that the provincial government be directed to restore the previous ratio of 50 per cent in each case.

The state counsel informed the court that the government had clearly publicised the changes in the admission policy and that it could not be challenged at the belated stage.

Meanwhile, a doctor has moved the Lahore High Court to secure a research certificate from a German institute through the good offices of the Government of Pakistan.

Dr Qaiser Rashid said that he reached an agreement on Sept 23, 2002 with the German Arthritis Research Centre, Berlin, for his Ph.D research in rheumatism.

On Nov 11, 2002, he was abruptly asked by the centre to discontinue his research and a certificate of studentship was issued to him.

Through advocate A.K.Dogar, he alleged the institute was avoiding issuance of a correct certificate as, during the course of research, he had performed three successful experiments which were in the nature of invention.

Rashid said he had exhausted all channels and now it was the Pakistani embassy which could help him procure the correct certificate.-PPI
