KARACHI, Oct 31: Kumar Sangakkara on Sunday became only the seventh batsman and the fourth Sri Lankan to score 1,000 runs both in Test cricket and One-day International in a calendar year.

Sangakkara, who had already notched up 1009 runs in ODIs this year, reached 1,000 runs during his battling knock of 138, ending up with 1104 in 11 Tests in 2004.

He joined compatriots Aravinda de Silva, Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardene, Indian master blaster Sachin Tendulkar and Inzamamul Haq, the current Pakistan captain, and the big-hitting Australian opener Matthew Hayden in the exalted company.

De Silva (1220 Test and 1212 ODI runs), Tendulkar (1000 Test and 1011 ODI runs) and Jayasuriya (1271 Test and 1178 ODI runs) achieved the coveted double in the calendar year 1997.

Inzamam made 1090 runs in Tests and another 1074 in ODIs in the year 2000. Jayawardene did so in 2001 when he accumulated 1053 run in Tests and 1260 in ODIs.

Hayden bludgeoned his way to the double in 2003 with 1312 run in Tests and 1037 in ODIs.

Sangakkara, who celebrated his 27th birthday on the eve of the Karachi Test on Wednesday, needed 37 runs to cross 1,000 Test runs in the current year.

After making 13 in the first innings, he was still 24 short of becoming the fifth player to achieve the milestone in 2004.

Jayasuriya had earlier beat his tem-mate to the landmark with his third run during his knock of 26 in the first innings.
