ISLAMABAD, Oct 26: Developments in tourism activities can strengthen ties between the peoples of Pakistan and Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) countries.

"The governments of Pakistan and ECO countries enjoy good relations due to proximity. But much needs to be done in encouraging people to people contact which is scarce. And this can be accomplished by promoting and developing tourism activities between Pakistan and ECO states," said Federal Minister for Tourism Dr GG Jamal on Tuesday.

Speaking as a chief guest at a seminar on "Development of Tourism in ECO Countries", the minister stressed that Pakistan and ECO states could benefit immensely from closer relations.

The ECO Cultural Association had arranged the seminar.

World's highest five peaks, historical heritage, and lush green valleys and streams were some of the magnificent tourism related features that could attract peoples of ECO states, the minister said.

He said tourism was one of world's most powerful agents of economic and cultural developments, and developing nations recognizing this phenomenon should include it as an integral part of development strategies.

Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation Managing Director Malik Mohammad Habib Khan said steps like development of Gwader sea port and motorways aimed at boosting trading between Pakistan and ECO countries.

Cultural Counsellor of Iran Ali Aursiji said Pakistan's history, culture, art, literature, language and lifestyle were influenced by the culture of Central Asian States.
