MULTAN, Oct 26: A local court on Tuesday extended the physical remand of the man arrested for selling his son to some Arabs for use as a camel jockey.

Ghulam Husain was arrested by the FIA (Multan) on Saturday from his village, Paigaah, situated near the Dera Ghazi Khan city. He was apprehended in connection with an investigation into the circumstances under which his son, Kaleem Husain, lost his life in a camel race in the UAE on Sept 28.

On the expiry of his three-day physical remand in FIA custody, Ghulam Husain was produced before the court of Senior Civil Judge Mohsin Raza on Tuesday.

The FIA urged the court to extend his remand as the investigators had yet to recover the passport of his wife, Haleema, besides ascertaining information about the number of Pakistani children hired as jockeys in Arab states, and that how many of them had met the fate similar to that of his son.

Therefore, the court extended his physical remand for two days.

Local FIA officials said Ghulam Husain and his wife along with their three sons - Kaleem, Asghar and Murtaza - had gone to the UAE some time back through travel agents Abdullah Khalol and Mohammad Ibraheem. The couple returned, while the boys remained there as camel jockeys. After Kaleem's death, the UAE authorities deported Murtaza as well while the whereabouts of Asghar were not known.

Both the travel agents are still at large. The FIA officials claimed that they were in the UAE.
