TOBA TEK SINGH, Oct 25: Punjab Forest Minister Dr Ashfaqur Rehman, who has been appointed to supervise the transparency in the appointment of hundreds of educators, has refused to distribute appointment letters to the appointees.

Speaking to Education Department officers in the DCO office here on Monday, he pointed out that various irregularities had been committed in the preparation of the merit list.

The minister directed the officers to immediately remove all irregularities in the merit list and take stern action against all those who were involved in this malpractice.

SASTA ATTA: Substandard sasta atta, and that too in insufficient quantity, is being provided to the poor under the Ramazan package here.

The district administration had announced supplying sufficient quantity of sasta atta at subsidized price of Rs188 per 20kg bag, but it was being sold at Rs190 per bag. Citizens also complained about the quality and weight of sasta atta.

OPPOSED: Public and political circles have opposed the proposed decision of the Pakistan Railways regarding the closure of Chenab Express train.

Tehsil Nazim Chaudhry Muhammad Rafiq, former PPP MPA Mian Muhammad Rafiq, DBA president Iqbal Butt, former PPP CEC member Ghiasuddin Janbaz, district PML-N secretary-general Rana Muhammad Anwar and Anjuman Tajran secretary-general Rana Khalid Mahmood demanded of the area parliamentarians to register their protest with the Railways minister.

They claimed that people of Toba, Shorkot, Gojra and other areas would suffer badly for onward journey to Karachi and Sargodha with the closure of this train.

FIXED: The district coordination officer on Monday once again fixed new prices for mutton and beef.

Earlier, the mutton and beef prices were fixed at Rs105 and Rs55 per kg, respectively. But after a two-day strike of the butchers, the DCO announced new price of mutton and beef.

According to a press release issued here on Monday, the mutton and beef would be sold at Rs130 and Rs70 per kg, respectively, in the open market and Rs120 and Rs65 per kg in Ramazan Bazaar.

However, the people alleged that butchers were charging Rs150 and Rs80 per kg for mutton and beef, respectively, in the open market.

EXPANSION: The Punjab irrigation department has decided to expand 40 feet width of Lower Chenab Canal to supply 18,000 cusec more water to minor canals and distributaries.

This was stated by District Nazim Chaudhry Muhammad Ashfaq while addressing farmers on Monday at Chak 242-GB, Noorpur Basti.

He said that he had recently met with President Pervez Musharraf and apprised him of irrigation water shortage at tail ends of Jhang and Gogera branches of canals. He said the president had assured him that the problems faced by the farmers would be solved on priority basis.
