PESHAWAR, Oct 25: Traffic police have launched a 15-day campaign to replace defective silencers of passenger buses plying in the city.

Under this campaign, launched in compliance with directives of the Traffic Police Chief, Syed Imtiaz Altaz, defective silencers would be replaced at nominal rates, said a press release.

At the end of the campaign, heavy fines would be imposed on the violators and their vehicles' silencers would be replaced at higher prices, the release added.

According to a survey, 50 per cent buses are fitted with inferior quality silencers and defective air cleaner filters, adding that wrong placement of filters was a major factor contributing to noise pollution in the city.

Recently, the Peshawar police impounded 92 buses the other day in a similar campaign and transporters had called for more time for voluntarily replacing their vehicles' silencers on which 15 days were given to them.

Under the campaign, a traffic police team, under the command of a motor vehicle examiner, would check silencers of buses at the Kamboh Ada in Peshawar. Furthermore, all owners would voluntarily bring their vehicles for checking at this centre.

At the end of the special campaign, the traffic police would impound the vehicles having sub-standard silencers.

Different transport unions had also supported the traffic police's campaign and they also arranged a function at the Kamboh Ada on Monday.

AIG Traffic Syed Imtiaz Altaf addressed the function and urged the bus owners to take advantage of the campaign.-app
