HYDERABAD, Oct 21: The chairman of the Sindh National Party, Mr Amir Bhambhro, has asked the Sindh chief minister to resign as sugar mill owners have refused to act on his directive to start the cane crushing season from Oct 20.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, he said a government which could not enforce its writ over a handful of industrialists had no right to remain in power.

He said the chief minister could enforce his decisions on the people of Thar but he was incapable of taking any action against the sugar mill owners.

The SNP president accused the government and the industrialists of damaging Sindh's agro economy. He said if the harvesting of sugarcane was delayed, the sugarcane lost weight and the cultivation of wheat was also seriously affected.

He said as compared to the last year, less sugarcane was cultivated and now a conspiracy was afoot to compel the growers not to cultivate sugarcane in future.

Mr Bhambhro urged the Sindh governor to take strict action against sugar mill owners under the Sugarcane Control Act and ensure just price of the crop as well as the payment of outstanding premium of Rs4.25 billion.
