CHAKWAL, Oct 19: Eight people died and nine others were injured on Tuesday morning in a head-on collision between a van and a truck near the Syed Kasran village on Chakwal-Mandra road.

Jatli police said the incident occurred when the Dhudial-bound van hit the truck coming from the opposite direction.

At least seven people died on the spot, while the injured were taken to district headquarters hospital, Chakwal, where one of them succumbed to injuries.

Those who died were: Ms Jannat, Ms Akhtar, Azad Hussain, Abdul Majeed Kiani, Ghulam Sarwar, Mohammad Nadeem, Mohammad Saleem and Mohammad Usman. Drivers of the two vehicles were among the dead.

Five of the injured - Mohammad Ramzan, Ehtasham, Rashid, Abdul Majeed and Manzoor Hussain - were shifted from the DHQ hospital to Rawalpindi because of their critical condition. However, four persons with minor injuries were discharged from the DHQ hospital after being provided medical treatment.
