Kenya can learn from Zimbabwe verdict

NAIROBI, Oct 19: Cricket Australia chairman Bob Merriman said the probe into racism in Zimbabwean cricket should serve as an impetus for Kenya in resolving its own internal conflicts.

Merriman, who arrived in Nairobi Tuesday from Lahore, Pakistan, is a member of nine-man independent committee to review Kenya Cricket Association (KCA) constitution. He will represent International Cricket Council (ICC) during the process.

"The probe by an independent body gave a significant report into state of Zimbabwe cricket. It was a victory for African cricket and we've a lot to learn from that report," Merriman, an ICC board member, said at press conference before launch of the committee.

The 73-page report, compiled by India's Solicitor General Goolam Vahanvati and South African High Court judge Steven Majiedt, found absolutely no evidence of racism in Zimbabwe cricket.

He said members have a big challenge to formulate a report which would serve as a way forward for Kenyan cricket that has been hit by infighting by officials over control and mismanagement in the running of sport.

Kenyan senior players boycotted an ICC Intercontinetal Cup qualifier against Namibia in Nairobi early this month over their contracts. Some of the players also accused Asian-led KCA management of racism.

"It is important we have an idea of where we are going by January, when report is presented to ICC for the purpose of development," he said.-PPI
