TOBA TEK SINGH, Oct 19: The purchase of meat by butchers from Lahore and Gujranwala from the rural areas of the district has caused mutton and beef price hike here.

Mutton which was available here two months ago at Rs120 per kg in urban markets and at Rs110 in rural areas, is now being sold at Rs160 and Rs140 per kg, respectively.

A local livestock trader disclosed that the butchers of Lahore and Gujranwala purchased slaughtered animals at Rs150 per kg and sold them at Rs200 per kg their areas.

With the start of Ramazan, the district administration has directed the butchers to sell meat at Rs105 per kg but butchers went on strike for three days, demanding Rs140 per kg fixation of the price. As the strike ended, they hiked the price by another Rs20 per kg.Mutton being sold in Ramazan Bazaars at the government fixed price of Rs 120 a kg is of poor quality.

The mutton shortage matter was brought into the notice of District Nazim Muhammad Ashfaq who issued an order on Tuesday under section 144 CrPC in which export of cattle, meat and beef was prohibited with immediate effect.
