LAHORE, Oct 17: Five people, including four of a family, were killed in two accidents here on Sunday. Ghulam Shabbir of Badami Bagh picked up his three niece - Ishrat (6), Aqsa (4) and Adeeba (2) - from their Shadbagh house for a meeting with their grandmother.

He was on way home when his motorcycle was hit by a truck on Bund Road. All four people sustained critical injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital where they died.

Passersby caught truck driver Aslam and gave him a sound thrashing. Later, the residents blocked the road and staged a demonstration. They also damaged some vehicles and put the truck on fire.

The police rushed to the scene and tried to calm down the protesters, but to no avail. The protesters kept on demanding the custody of the truck driver whom the police had snatched from them.

Later, two Nazims reached the place and held talks with the protesters who dispersed on an assurance of due punishment to the accused.

However, some 100 of the protesters marched towards the Shadbagh police station and surrounded it, threatening to put it on fire if the accused was not handed over to them. Negotiations with them were under way till the filing of this report.

Zulfikar along with his wife, Khadija Bibi, and son Irfan, 8, was on way home when their motorcycle was hit by a van in Kahna. They all sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital where Khadija died. The condition of the two other injured was stated to be critical.

TWO MURDERED: A man allegedly shot dead his elder brother in Hadyara on Sunday. Quoting family, police said Ghulam Rasool and his younger brother, Ghulam Nabi, had a dispute over property since long. Ghulam Nabi opened fire on his brother after an exchange of hot words over the issue. Ghulam Rasool died on way to hospital.
