SRINAGAR, Sept 11: One person died and 16 were wounded in revolt-hit Kashmir when suspected freedom fighters hurled a grenade in a busy market on Saturday while two soldiers died in other violence, police said.

The blast occurred in Kupwara town which has a heavy army presence and borders Line of Control.

A police spokesman said 16 people were injured and a civilian died when militants hurled a grenade at a security patrol and added the explosion created chaos in Kupwara, 100 kilometres north of Srinagar.

The explosion on the busiest shopping day of the week emptied the market as people scattered in panic.

Elsewhere, two soldiers were killed and two others were wounded in central Budgam district overnight when militants in a truck opened fire on the troops after being asked to stop at a checkpoint, police said.-AFP
