MUZAFFARABAD, June 2: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir government has imposed an “undeclared emergency” in the state to meet any eventuality as the threat of war loomed in the wake of India’s aggressive posture.

“We have asked all the government departments to remain fully alert as the threat of Indian aggression is looming large in the region,” an official spokesman told Dawn on Saturday.

His comments were sought by this correspondent after witnessing a notice affixed on prominent places in some government offices, asking the employees to ensure their attendance.

“Since the emergency has been imposed, all the employees are duly informed that the vacations have been cancelled and that everyone should ensure attendance at his respective place of posting,” the notice read.

However, the spokesman stressed that no formal declaration regarding emergency had been issued by the government.

“You can say that an undeclared emergency has been imposed because of the danger of war,” said the spokesman, who requested anonymity.

The civil defence department, said the spokesman, had been directed to keep its preparations complete, besides educating people about the precautionary measures. The doctors and paramedical staff had been asked to remain present in hospitals and healthcare centres.
