KARACHI, July 24: Naib Nazim Tariq Hasan has stressed on sustainable development at grassroots level through local government system.

He was addressing at the concluding ceremony of a week-long training course on "Community Development" here at the Municipal Training and Research Institute on Saturday.

A total of 56 nazims, naib nazims, district councillors, tehsil and town councillors, executive district officers, district officers and town municipal officers from all over the country attended the workshop.

Tariq Hasan said that the new local government system was key to sustainable development at community level. Lauding the efforts of President Musharraf for introducing the system of democracy at grassroots level, he said that the system was working well all over the country.

However, he stressed that further efforts were needed to make it more successful.

Earlier, the principal of Municipal Training and Research Institute Mohammad Afzal Arain gave briefing on the role of the institute for training of local bodies officials.

He said that this training enhanced the skill development of local leaders and functionaries. -PPI
