PESHAWAR, June 27: Political leaders of the mainstream parties expressed concern on Saturday at the resignation of prime minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali, saying the move would shatter the democratic system in the country.

The Central Senior Vice-President of the Awami National Party, Haji Mohammad Adeel, said the so-called parliamentary system manufactured by General Musharraf for himself would further endanger the democratic system in the country.

The NWFP Vice-President of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, Senator Prof Mohammad Ibrahim, said the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal wanted to run the system in a democratic way but President Gen Pervez Musharraf was bent upon destroying the system he himself created.

"The tug-of-war for power in the ruling party will severely damage the system," he said. "Mr Jamali's resignation is a matter of concern for all the democratic forces," he said.

ARD's central Secretary-General Zafar Iqbal Jhagra said: "There is no democracy in the country and a dictator is ruling the country."

He appealed to all the democratic forces in the country to unite under a single platform and struggle for the restoration of real democracy in the country.-PPI
