ISLAMABAD, May 29: The government is considering a proposal in consultation with stakeholders to do away with the condition of giving wealth statement with the income tax return from the next tax year.

Informed sources told Dawn on Saturday that the budget making committee was considering the proposal following the massive decline registered in the filing of wealth statement by the taxpayers during the current tax-year.

The total number of wealth statements filed this year stood at 0.25 million against the 0.5 million last year, showing a decline of almost 50 per cent.

According to the sources the income tax authorities were opposing the move on the grounds what they believed that the data collected through the wealth statement could be used to compute the actual income of the taxpayers.
