MIRAMSHAH, May 27: Senior Pakistani and US military officials met at a border checkpoint in the North Waziristan tribal region on Thursday to discuss recent incursions by American troops into the tribal area, official sources said.

The flag meeting began at around 12.30 in the afternoon and lasted for about an hour and a half, the official sources told Dawn. Pakistani military team, led by Brig Shahid Afzal, who heads the brigade command in Miramshah, the headquarters of the North Waziristan tribal region, met his American counterpart Brig.

Jacob who had flown into Alwara Mandai border checkpoint, the sources said. Commandant Tochi Scouts, Col. Ashiq Hussain assisted Brig. Shahid Afzal in the talks.

According to these sources, the two sides discussed recent incursions by American troops into the Pakistani tribal territory, and ways and means to allay US troops concerns that they were being fired at from the Pakistani tribal territory.

The meeting was held in the wake of at least four border incursions by American troops into Alwara Mandi, a small market on the border with Afghanistan, about 90km to the west of Miramshah, claiming that they had been fired upon from the Pakistani side of the border.
