JHANG, May 22: Sheikh Mohammad Yaqoob of PML-Q was elected Naib district Nazim, after he defeated Syed Asad Hayat in the by-polls on Saturday in three tehsils of the district.

Mr Yaqoob polled 1,449 votes against 723 secured by his opponent.

Meanwhile, Sultan Sikandar Bharwana of the ruling party won the slot of Jhang tehsil Naib Nazim by securing 706 votes against 176 and 90 bagged by his opponents, Munir Ahmad and Arshad Gujjar respectively.

The district Naib Nazim's slot fell vacant after Syed Asad Hayat resigned in 2002 to contest for a national assembly seat. Javed Yasin Chela stepped down from the office of Jhang tehsil Naib Nazim in 2002 for the same reason.
