BADIN: Mill agrees to pay dues

Published March 28, 2004

BADIN, March 27: Sacked workers of the Bawani Sugar Mills, Talhar, ended their protest on Friday after successful negotiations with the mill management on the issue of dues.

When contacted, mill director Abdul Hussain Buledi said the matter had been resolved in talks with the workers.

He said the mill management had agreed to pay 50 per cent of dues to workers by April 5 as 50 per cent payment had already been made to them on Eid.

The mill had abolished its three departments, including cane, civil and mill transport, and retrenched 115 permanent workers. Of the retrenched workers, 75 had accepted golden handshake.

However, the workers resorted to protest after the mill paid them 50 per cent of their dues and kept them on false hopes for the remaining amount.

Inspite of the fact that the mill owner planned to buy the Khoski Sugar Mills, the mill management had been denying the payment of the amount to the workers on the pretext that the mill had sustained losses.

This had infuriated the workers who staged a sit-in outside the mill gate and stopped sugar supply for five days.
