KARACHI, Feb 21: Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi and opening batsman Imran Nazir were named on Saturday in the revised list of probables for next month's home One-day International series against India.

The Pakistan selection committee also recalled opener Saleem Elahi and middle-order batsman Naved Latif. They replaced the batting quartet of Bazid Khan, Asim Kamal, Faisal Iqbal and Shadab Kabir, who all were released from the original list of 22 probables to play in domestic first-class matches.

The 22-year-old Imran and Naved who ironically turned 28 on Saturday, participated in last December's triangular 'A' team tournament at Eden Gardens in Kolkata where Pakistan were led by Afridi.

The training camp will begin in Lahore from Tuesday.

Chairman of selectors, Wasim Bari, told Dawn that after the announcement of the itinerary, it was decided to adjust plans because the one-dayers were being played first.

"We have taken this step to ensure Pakistan have the best available one-day squad given the importance of the series against the Indians," he said.

Bari also added that fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar and off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq had requested the selectors that they wanted to play in the latest round of Quaid-i-Azam Cup and Trophy matches.

"Both Shoaib and Saqlain have been granted permission in order to gain the much-needed match practice before the series. They will join the training camp after the completion of the domestic matches," said the former Test captain and wicket-keeper.

Afridi, who has scored 5151 runs and taken 131 wickets in 176 One-day Internationals since 1996,97 has not represented the senior Pakistan after appearing in the World Cup 2003 fixture against India at Centurion on March 1, the day when he celebrated his 23rd birthday.

Imran, who has scored 1340 runs in 57 one-day appearances, was sidelined after the fourth One-day International against Bangladesh last September.

Naved, who has played in 11 ODIs, wins his first call-up to the senior ranks since last playing against South Africa in the one-dayer at Rawalpindi in October.

Saleem Elahi, the 27-year-old right-hander with 1579 runs in 48 ODIs under his belt, recently toured New Zealand.

Mohammad Khalil and Zahid Saeed will also attend the training camp from Friday (Feb 27) specifically to provide batsmen practice against left-arm pace bowling, the chairman of selectors reiterated because India's pace bowling department includes Zaheer Khan, Irfan Pathan and Ashish Nehra.

Bari emphasised the need for improvement in all departments of the game if Pakistan were to perform well against India.

"We have to work very hard to achieve the desired results. And I am sure we couldn't have picked a better set of players.

"Also let me make one thing clear, we have kept our options open regarding selection. Players who have not been included among probables will also get a chance if they perform exceptionally well in the ongoing domestic matches like Naved Latif and Imran Nazir have shown recently," he remarked.

The chief selector added that the Pakistan squad and the team for the Indian warm-up at Lahore on March 11, will be announced on either March 7 or 8.

Probables: Imran Farhat, Taufiq Umar, Yasir Hameed, Yousuf Youhana, Inazamam-ul-Haq (captain), Shahid Afridi, Imran Nazir, Naved Latif, Saleem Elahi, Misbah-ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Abdul Razzaq, Shoaib Malik, Saqlain Mushtaq, Danish Kaneria, Moin Khan (wicket-keeper), Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami, Shabbir Ahmed, Umar Gul, Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan and Rao Iftikhar.
