PESHAWAR, Feb 14: A comprehensive contingency plan had been chalked out to maintain peace during Muharram, senior police officials said here on Saturday.

Inspector-General of Police Mohammad Raffat Pasha said this during a meeting with delegations of the Idara Tablighul Islam, Peshawar, and the Markazi Aman Committee, which called on the police chief here.

The delegations were led by MPAs Syed Zahir Shah and Syed Asad Ali Shah.

Stressing the need for refraining from resorting to violence, he said it was vital to protect the people's rights and properties.

Appreciating the people of Peshawar's sense of unity, he emphasized on fostering love and brotherhood, reminding that disunity damaged to the cause of the Ummah.

The IGP said that better preventive measures had been planned for the maintenance of the law and order this year.

He said that provocative pamphlets and speeches had been prohibited and any bid to disturb the community peace would be foiled, adding that police patrols had been intensified and adequate facilities would be provided to the police in this regard.

Members of both the delegations appreciated police's efforts in this regard and expressed satisfaction over the steps taken for maintenance of peace during Muharram, adding that they would cooperate with the police in this regard.-PPI
