HYDERABAD, Feb 4: Sindh Law Students' Action Committee leaders continued a token hunger strike outside the press club here on 46th consecutive day on Wednesday.
Mumtaz Lashari, Nazeer Leghari, Zulfiqar Awan, Maqbool Mallah and others are protesting against 50 per cent increase in fees of law colleges.
Talking to journalists, they said the board of directors of law colleges and Sindh University authorities had tried to hoodwink students by reducing the proposed fees from 100 per cent to 50 per cent. They said it was record increase in fees and demanded it should be withdrawn.
DEMO: The Shia Action Committee held a protest demonstration at the Qadamgah-i- Maula Ali after the Eid congregation here on Monday against the continued imprisonment of Millat-i-Jafria chief Allama Sajid Ali Naqvi.
The protesters said Mr Naqvi had nothing to do with the murder of Azam Tariq as he had always worked for the unity of Muslim Ummah and supremacy of Islam.
SRTC WORKERS: Former employees of the defunct Sindh Road Transport Corporation continued their token hunger strike on Eid day and adopted a novel method of protest by eating grass as a symbol of starvation. They are protesting against the non-payment of 15 per cent mark up on their dues.
CIVIC PROBLEMS: The coordination committee of the Qasimabad Shehri Ittehad at a meeting the other day resolved to continue struggle to solve civic problems of the area.
Representatives of political parties, social welfare organizations and business community including, Tanveer Shaikh, Zain Daudpoto, Sanaullah Shaikh, Apa Nazeer Qureshi and others attended the meeting which was presided over by Jam Saqi.
The meeting divided the taluka into four zones and appointed committees to prepare reports about problems confronting their respective zones by Feb 10. The meeting decided to hold elections of the coordination committee.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Saqi said the taluka had been neglected by the successive administrations and the people were meted out step motherly treatment.
He said lawlessness and extortion by the criminals had become the order of the day in the area. He said sewerage system had totally collapsed and dirty water had accumulated on the roads and streets.
ENCROACHMENTS: The executive committee, Hyderabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, at a meeting held here the other day expressed concern over the increasing encroachments at commercial centres in the city.
The meeting demanded that the district Nazim and the City taluka Nazim should order the removal of encroachments.
