NAROWAL, Jan 17: A DSP was arrested after he stormed the court of a judicial magistrate along with a police contingent in an attempt to get an SHO released from the court custody, on Saturday.

Reports coming in here said Zafarwal police SHO Malik Ghulam Abid appeared in the court of Civil Judge Ghulam Shabbir Husain Gill and allegedly misbehaved with the judge during the proceedings. The judge ordered his arrest for contempt of court and handed over his custody to a bailiff, Muhammad Younis.

Hearing about the SHO's arrest, the DSP (legal) and inspectors (legal) appeared in court and requested the judge to pardon the accused SHO, but they were asked to apply for his bail.

Meanwhile, Narowal headquarters DSP Muhammad Nawaz, along with Inspector Salahuddin Butt, Sub-Inspector Faryad Ali and a heavy contingent of police, forcibly entered the courtroom and tried to rescue the SHO, who was already handcuffed. However, lawyers and court staff foiled the police bid.

The lawyers and police had clashed after which the court bailiff arrested DSP Nawaz, who along with the SHO was sent behind the bars for contempt of court.

A separate FIR has also been registered with city police station on the bailiff's complaint.

Meanwhile, the District Bar Association condemned the incident at its full house meeting and announced strike for tomorrow (Monday).

APP adds the DSP and the SHO were awarded six-month imprisonment each.
