KHAIRPUR, Jan 10: Power breakdowns continued for the second day here on Saturday, paralysing civic life and business activities.
More than 50 colonies and main markets remained without power from 8am to 6pm.
Talking to journalists, residents of the Luqman locality said the power supply to the area was disconnected at 5am in the morning and remained suspended for about 10 hours. They said this practice was continuing for the last two days.
Patients of the Government Lady Wellington Hospital, Government City Hospital, Khairpur Civil Hospital and the Government TB Hospital faced problems as their tests could not be conducted due to the power failure.
The supply of water to residents of Anbar, Osto Gally, Panj Hatti, Ali Raza Shah, Tapali Ghati, Hashmi Mohalla, Godo Shop and other localities was also affected.
The residents said the non-supply of water on account of power suspension had added to their problems.
TRANSFERRED: Taluka municipal officer Mohammad Ayub Khorkhani was transferred on Friday by the local government department in the wake of complaints about non-supply of water, accumulation of filth and failure of the drainage system.
Manzoor Ahmad Shaikh took over as the new TMO.
Protest: Shopkeepers and citizens of Chondiko, the main town of taluka Nara in the Thar area, observed a strike against local Hesco officials here on Friday.
The protesters said that electric supply is usually disconnected at 6pm and remains disconnected till 12 noon of the next day, and for the last two days it has not been restored.
They added that the abadgars use tube wells on makeshift basis but due to suspension of electricity they cannot irrigate crops and cultivate wheat. Whereas on the other hand, electricity was suspended in Khairpur town at about 3pm which was restored at 7pm.
They said business activities remain suspended due to power breakdowns and water supply was also affected.
NAZIM: Zila Nazim of Khairpur, Nafisa Shah has ordered that payment to contractors be stopped, over the quality of development works being carried out in the district.
The nazim, along with members of the monitoring committee inspected the developments works being carried out in Kingri taluka. In this connection she visited Sadder Jon Bhattion, Chattan Shah Road, Hadal Shah, Budai Machi, and Bindo Narejo, where roads are being constructed under funding by the Asian Development Bank.
UC Nazims Mir Ashfaq Talpur, Khadim Hussain Shah and others told her that substandard material was being used in the construction of roads.
They also made a complaint about the taluka nazim of Kingri, Syed Abdul Latif Shah, and alleged that, at his behest, the contractors were using substandard material in the works.
She said payments would be stopped till the contractors rectified the defects.
