KARACHI, April 24: The street kids of the city took part in the sports day activities arranged at St Don Bosco cricked ground here, on Sunday. Most of these street living kids comprised of those visiting the Marie Adelaide drop-in centres. Counterparts of these street kids belonged to various schools of the city.

There was no distinction among the participants as all 60 kids were provided opportunity to intermingle and be part of a healthy competition.

The event organised by the Youth of the Archdiocese of Karachi, “Shelter the future” in collaboration with the Marie Adelaide rehabilitation centre was a successful attempt to restore trust and confidence of many of the abandoned kids, hooked to glue-sniffing and suffering from absolute dejection.

Angela Heatherly of Shelter the Future talking to APP said our focus was to help develop communication with these children and engender in them a sense of participation.

“We ought to develop a conducive and friendly environment for these children before they emerge as hard core addicts,” Brother Joe of Marie Adelaide supplemented Angela.

It may not be out of context to remind that a large majority of street kids in Karachi live in the fear of molestation, emotional, physical and drug abuse on the streets.—APP
