KARACHI, April 19: The members of the city council on Tuesday adopted a resolution condemning the arrest of elected members, political leaders, workers and misbehaviour of the police with journalists on the occasion of Asif Ali Zardari’s arrival at Lahore. The members demanded the release of all arrested leaders and workers besides asking the government to withdraw cases against them.
They also demanded stern action against responsible police officials.
The adjourned session was held with the City Naib Nazim, Tariq Hasan, in the chair at the City Council Hall.
The members expressed their concern over the police behaviour, in which hundreds of people were arrested at airports, railway stations and hotels on April 15 and 16.
“Such arrests will not only promote provincial discrimination and ethnic inequity, but will also encourage anti-provincial groups, which Pakistan could not afford,” they said.
Earlier, the City Naib Nazim, Tariq Hasan, gave an extra week time to the members of the city council to submit its report about the matter of police maltreatment of lady administrator of Brinton Carry Girls Hostel. The committee was set up in the last session to probe into the matter.
The committee members, Younus Sohan, Jafarul Hasan, had informed the house that about four to five members of committee were out of the city. “Due to their absence the report could not be finalized yet and more time is needed,” they said. —PPI
