LAHORE, May 30: Lt-Gen Khalid Maqbool (retired), the Punjab governor, said here on Thursday education at universities and government colleges for women was purposeful and helped make the graduates effective members of society.

Speaking to the students and teachers of Government Islamia College for Women, Cooper Road, here he said the government would continue to provide the required resources to the educational institutions for women. He said the government wanted them to play leading roles in the society.

The governor said by giving 33 per cent representation to women in the district councils the government had proved its sincerity.

The governor visited various sections of the college including its computer department and library. Till the completion of the post-graduate block, he said, evening classes could be held in the existing building. Besides the two-year computer studies, he said, BSc classes would be introduced in the college during the next four months.

The governor announced a Rs20 million grant for the construction of post-graduate block, repair of 10 class rooms, installation of a new tubewell and replacement of the water supply pipeline.

He said the government was considering a proposal to establish day care centres in higher education institutions for women.
