SANGHAR, May 30: Zakat committees have stopped disbursement of Rs60 million which were to be distributed among the eligible people under the Guzara Allowance, rehabilitation package and student scholarship schemes.

When contacted on telephone, Zakat and Ushr officials said District Nazim Roshan Din Junejo had imposed a ban and certain formalities had been made mandatory before giving the Zakat. He said this was decided in the 14th May session of the district council.

According to new rules, eligible people have to get a certificate from the majority of union council members and Nazim and Naib Nazim of their union council. This condition has created problems for poor people as they can not approach such a number of members.

The district council members told Dawn that these conditions had been enforced following complaints of misappropriation of a huge amount in the Zakat fund by some officials of Zakat and Ushr with connivance of local Zakat chairmen.

FEE COLLECTION: The dispute between two groups of transporters over the collection of bus stop fees from drivers in Tando Adam is creating problems for commuters.

The henchmen of Basheer Mari and Mohammad Bux Mari groups forcibly disembark passengers from vans when drivers refuse to pay the money.

Both the group have the support of influential people.

Sources told Dawn that more than Rs20 thousands were collected daily from the transporters in the name of bus stop fees but the police had done nothing to stop this illegal collection.

They said the collectors had no legal authority to collect the amount as no permission has been obtained and if any transporter refused to pay, his driver was beaten up or windscreens were smashed and tyres were deflated.

An air conditioned coach operator has to pay Rs400 per trip.

tow injured: A man attacked his sister and her paramour with hatchet on the pretext of Karo kari and wounded them seriously in Ward-2 here on late Wednesday night.

Mohammad Hanif suspected that his sister, Shahnaz, had illicit relations with Khawar Mehmood, who was also her brother-in-law.

The injured were taken to the Sanghar Civil Hospital and were later shifted to Nawabshah where the condition of Ms Shahnaz was stated to be serious.
