DERA GHAZI KHAN, March 22: Relief work has been started with help of army in flood-affected areas of Jampur tehsil, Rajanpur, where hill torrents played havoc on Monday. Efforts to plug breaches in Dajal canal were also in progress. MNA Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari visited the affected areas of Wasti Tall, Dajal canal to take the stock of the situation prevailing in the Pacchad areas. According to APP, strong hill torrent from Suleman Range started subsiding on Tuesday.

DG Khan Irrigation SE Mian Ghaffar told APP that water came from mountains as a consequent effect of heavy rains through Nullah Kaha Sultan and Chachar. But the main damage was done by Kaha torrent. There were no reports of casualties.

Jampur Naib Nazim Qazi Saifullah said water caused damage to houses and standing crops in over 15 villages in the tehsil besides a rural health centre and a graveyard. Water level that was recorded at 42,000 cusecs on Monday morning in Kaha Sultan nullah, rose to 78000 cusecs by 2pm on Monday, SE Mian Ghaffar said. It dropped to 51,975 cusecs by 7 am on Tuesday.

The torrent reached 1700-cusec capacity in Dajal canal after covering around 35 kilometres area through Kaha, breaching the canal at five points on Monday. “Later, the irrigation department made relief cuts at four other points in the canal to divert water direction and lessen its pressure to save the canal, the communication infrastructure, DG Khan-Rajanpur road, and Jampur city”, the SE added.

Scores of people took shelter at government buildings and at mounds at different places, including Pul Choti, Dajal More, Boharwali Hatti, Dagal town, Pakiwala siphon, Patti Qazi and Kotla Gujjar, Basti Danwar Naushera Gharbi and Jhok Mahar, said Qazi Saifullah.

He added that crops at Mauza Dajal and other surrounding villages, including Patti Qazi, Patti Machi, Kotla Gujjar, Raqba Dhandla, Azmatwala, Rakh Azmatwala, Darkhast Jamal Khan Gharbi No 2, Mauza Hambhi, Manjhani, Naushera Gharbi, Tibbi Solgi, Raqba Naushera, Islampur, and Hajipur, were damaged badly.

He also said that houses were also damaged in the villages but could not specify how many. The flood water also affected vehicular traffic at link road from Jampur to Dajal.
