KARACHI, March 18: Sunny William reached the final of the boys Under-16 Pakistan Junior tennis championship, when he outclassed Zayyad Wyne 6-1, 6-2 in the first semifinal played at the NORE-1 (Naval Courts), Bahria, Queens Road on Friday. Playing attacking tennis from the baseline, Sunny in full command of the situation from the start, moved smoothly ahead and will now take on Mohammad Abbas in the final to be played on Sunday afternoon.

In a very closely fought out encounter in the other semifinal, Abbas had to work up a sweat in overcoming the fighting spirit of Wilson Williams 7-5, 6-4. Playing attacking tennis from the baseline the two ran neck and neck till 5-5 then Wilson with two unforced errors when he sent three returns into the net, surrendered the first set 7-5.

But he did come back strongly in the second, taking a 2-0 lead until Abbas was on even keel at 3-3. Fighting hard for every point and the crowd cheering them on, Wilson once again lost his service with the scores tied at 4-4. Abbas serving for the match came through a 6-4 winner with two lovely passing shots which drew plenty of applause from the spectators.

Adil Khori reached the final of the boys’ under-12 competition, brushing aside Arsalan 6-1, 6-2 and will take on Khawja Hamza in the final. Khawja had to work hard to finally overcome Hasan Azad 6-2, 6-3 in the second semifinal.

In the boys’ doubles quarterfinal round, the top seeds Mohammad Abbas and Sunny Williams faced a torrid time before beating the fighting combination of Manoj and Wilson Williams 7-5 6-4.

The finals will now be played on Sunday with the Under-12 competition getting off at 4.00pm. The final of the boys Under-16 will be played at 4-30pm.

Boys under-16 (semifinals): Sunny Williams bt Zayyad Wyne 6-1, 6-2; Mohammad Abbas bt Wilson Williams 7-5, 6-4.

Boys under-12 (semifinals): Adil Kohari bt Arsalan 6-1, 6-2.; Khawja Hamza bt Hasan Azad 6-2, 6-3.

Boys under-16 doubles (quarterfinal): Mohammad Abbas and Sunny Williams bt Manoj and Wilson Williams 7-5, 6-4.
