GCT, GPI advance to next round

BANNU, March 16: Government College of Technology, Peshawar and Government Polytechnic Institute, Haripur recorded victories on the opening day of the Inter-institute hockey championship at the Qazi Mohib Hockey Complex on Wednesday.GCT defeated Government College of Commerce, Dera Ismail Khan 4-1.GCT, with attacking game, took 1-0 lead in early stages through right winger Nasir who took the ball from the centreline and slammed it into the net after dodging three defenders.Outside left Mohsin doubled the lead through a field attempt while Yasir scored the third goal two minute later off a penalty corner rebound. GCT led 3-0 till halftime.

After the resumption of second-half Yasir struck again a beautiful goal to make it 4-0. Umar Farooq slammed in a goal for the losers off a field attempt to reduce the margin 4-1.

In the other match, GPI, Haripur defeated GPI, Nowshera 6-5. The teams remained locked 1-1 till the scheduled time and the match went to GPI Haripur on penalty strokes.

Nasir scored in the 12th minute for the winners while Fawad slammed in a goal off a field attempt for the losers.—APP
