HYDERABAD, Feb 24: Transformers installed at the main water pumping station in Thandi Sarak were destroyed in a fire caused by a short circuit here on Thursday afternoon, affecting water supply to three talukas of the city.

According to the managing director of Wasa, 40MGD filter plants were also closed due to the incident. He said that supply to Latifabad taluka, Gari Khata, Qilla, Cantonment, Station Road, Radio Pakistan, Fatima Jinnah Road, Tilak Chari, Cloth Market, Phase-I and II of Abdullah Town, Abdullah Blessings, Naseem Nagar, Sehrish Nagar and Memon Nagar will remain suspended for 24 hours. The Wasa official said that steps were being taken for replacing transformers at the earliest. Consumers were advised to use water sparingly.

JSSF PROTEST: Activists of the Jeay Sindh Students Federation (Sindh University unit) held a demonstration outside the press club here on Thursday to protest against the administration of the central jail.

Speaking to the protesters, party leaders Sudheer Tunio, Raja Korai, Zulfiqar Mallah and others alleged that the jail administration did not allow party activists to meet their leaders detained there.

They demanded that ban on interviews of detainees belonging to the party - Zafar Korejo, Waheed Soomro, Kehar Ansari and Nisar Solangi - should be lifted and false cases registered against them withdrawn.
