Sugar millers, govt to meet today

Published February 24, 2005

LAHORE, Feb 23: The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association and the government are holding a meeting on Thursday (today) in Islamabad amid rising fears among sugar millers about future of the industry , specially after the official decision to allow unlimited duty-free import.

According to industry sources, it has become non-competitive in domestic market because of heavy dependence on single product, sugar. The meeting would discuss ways and means to diversify industry's products, add value in them and help it out of its present bind.

Federal Industries Minister Jehangir Khan Tareen would lead the government side and PSMA chairman Chaudhry Zaka Ashraf would be heading team of industry representatives. The industry also wants to discuss the impact of a recent government decision to allow import of sugar.
