PESHAWAR: Flag march

Published February 19, 2005

PESHAWAR, Feb 18: Flag marches by troops in five sensitive districts of the NWFP are continuing with a view to averting any untoward incident during Muharram.

The ISPR authorities on Friday took local journalists to parts of the cantonment and city areas to apprise them about the flag march.

The march is meant to assist the civil administration at short notice in case of any emergency, the official told journalists. Corps Commander Lt-Gen Safdar Hussain has issued special instructions to GOC Peshawar, Maj-Gen Mohammad Akram Sahi, and GOC Kohat, Maj-Gen Niaz Khattak, for maintenance of peace in their respective areas.

The Peshawar Garrison has also taken special measures to maintain law order in the city during Muharram. In some areas army personnel have been placed on alert to report during any emergency situation. -APP
