MULTAN, Feb 17: The Anti-Narcotics Force reportedly arrested a number of people in a raid conducted on Thursday in a city's nomadic settlement.

An ANF team raided Basti Oadawali on Abdali Road and arrested one Shama Oad and his four accomplices allegedly after recovering a sizable quantity of hashish from their possession.

An ANF official said that Shama had been a 'notorious' drug trafficker and he already had some narcotics cases against him registered with a number of police stations in Multan.

SENT TO JAIL: An ASI charged under controversial circumstances by his senior officer for allegedly taking bribe was sent to jail on Thursday for 14 days in judicial custody.

ASI Zafarul Islam of the Cantonment police station was arrested on Wednesday when ASP Imran Mehmood reported that he had caught the ASI red-handed while taking Rs4,000 in bribe from accused Mansha Sipra in a fraud case.

Maqsood Abidi had lodged an FIR against the accused for issuing him a bogus cheque of Rs500,000. The ASI was the investigation officer in the case. However, some officials told reporters that the ASP had first pressurized the ASI to do a favour to the accused in the investigation report, but when he refused to succumb to the pressure he was charged for corruption.

When contacted, ASP Imran said the allegation of pressuring the ASI was far from the reality. He claimed that the bribe money had been recovered from the ASI. "How could I tolerate the unlawful act being committed in the room adjacent to my office", he added. When talked, a senior police officer hinted that an independent inquiry would soon be conducted into the matter.
