KARACHI, Feb 15: The opposition in provincial assembly on Tuesday requisitioned the assembly session to debate the phenomenal price hike, deteriorating law and order situation and police excesses resulting in custodial killings, lack of job opportunities and the issues of NFC award, Kalabagh dam and Thal projects.

This was disclosed by the leader of the opposition in Sindh Assembly, Nisar Khuhro, at a news conference in the committee room. Fifty-nine members, including the MPAs of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, had signed the requisition that was submitted to Speaker Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah.

Explaining the driving force behind the requisition, Mr Khuhro said that the PPP-Parliamentarian was deeply concerned over the prevailing law and order situation, as people were dying either in police custody or were being killed in police firing for there was no check on the police.

He said that the check on police could not be exercised because Public Safety Commission had not been allowed to set up, neither in Karachi nor in any other part of the province. For Karachi, he said that even the names were short listed but alleged that the governor got them removed.

Mr Khuhro said that common man was reeling under rapidly escalating price of essential items. He pointed out that the recent increase in price of petroleum products, sugar, milk, and other essential items had further aggravated the miseries of common man, especially the salaried class.

He also condemned the government for not providing jobs to a vast majority of literate youth and expressed doubts over the manner in which the government issued notification relaxing age limit for jobs. He also reiterated the PPP stand on NFC award, Kalabagh and Thal projects and failure of the government to convene the Council of Common Interests meeting.
